Glitch Lich performance at the 6 June 2014 live event

Those that were able to attend our live event on 6 June 2014 will doubtless remember the astonishing opening performance from Glitch Lich, with Chad McKinney onstage in London and Cole Ingraham joining remotely from Shanghai. The video is now available to view online. If you want to catch Chad in conversation with other electronic music producers and leading electronic music researcher Luis-Manuel Garcia, you can also check out the video of the panel that took place on the same night.

Valuing Electronic Music: a video introduction

Back in June, we held our first public event, with live music performances, talks, and free food. The talks and performances were recorded and soon they will all be available online. We’re starting with Anna’s, Byron’s, and my introduction to the Valuing Electronic Music project as a whole. In this talk, we explain how and why we have been studying the value of electronic music, and reveal a little of what we’ve found out so far.

Liquidarity: a talk by Luis-Manuel Garcia

Those who were able to attend our live event at the Lexington on 6 June 2014 were privileged to hear a typically engaging and thought-provoking presentation from leading ethnographer of electronic dance music, Luis-Manuel Garcia. In it, Luis explored what he called the ‘particular form of togetherness that happens at electronic music events’, which he related to the areas investigated by the Valuing Electronic Music project.

Like all the talks and performances of the night, Luis’s presentation was recorded – and now it’s available for view.

Public event: so many thanks are due

The (first?) Valuing Electronic Music public event took place on 6 June upstairs at the Lexington on Pentonville Rd in London. Which means that exactly seven days ago to the minute, I was standing in front of the mixing desk with Anna, wondering just how much longer I could credibly put off jumping onto the stage and introducing the whole thing. Thank you so much to everyone who made it happen (especially Glitch Lich, Winterlight, Slackk, Luis-Manuel Garcia, and our brilliant event producer, Josh McNorton), and to everyone who came along. Also to the people who spread the word, without whom so many fewer people would have come along. And thank you to the AHRC, because of whom the event was free.

Over the next few weeks, we’ll start uploading podcasts based on the event itself and on last month’s workshop.

HungryVisuals to take part in Valuing Electronic Music event, 6 June

It’s now confirmed that the public event on 6 June (click here for the poster) will feature images from the Clubland project by HungryVisuals. One of the most interesting avenues that we’ve been exploring on the ethnographic side of the project is the embodied nature of valuing. Good DJs learn to read a crowd’s physical responses to music, for example. And different venues are characterised by different ways of physically expressing appreciation for the music played. The Clubland project is a unique attempt to document the London club scene through medium format photography, and as such it provides a powerful record of the embodiment of electronic music and its value.

Valuing Electronic Music

Valuing Electronic Music is an ongoing study of electronic music and the people who value it, carried out by Daniel Allington (Open University), Anna Jordanous (King’s College, London), and Byron Dueck (Open University). Our work explores how the value of electronic music transcends economic value for producers, DJs, and audiences – and how geographical location continues to play a significant role in the recognition of musical value even where musical scenes become increasingly international (thanks in large part to websites such as SoundCloud). Such findings have implications for the careers of music-makers more generally.
